ब्रह्मोवाच
अव्यक्तात्पूर्वमुत्पन्नो महानात्मा महामतिः
आदिर्गुणानां सर्वेषां प्रथमः सर्ग उच्यते

MN DUTT: 09-208-001

अव्यक्तात् पूर्वमुत्पन्नो महानात्मा महामतिः
आदिर्गुणानां सर्वेषां प्रथमः सर्ग उच्यते

M. N. Dutt: From the unmanifest first originated the Great Soul, gifted with great intelligence, the source of all the qualities. That is said to be the first creation.

महानात्मा मतिर्विष्णुर्विश्वः शंभुश्च वीर्यवान्
बुद्धिः प्रज्ञोपलब्धिश्च तथा ख्यातिर्धृतिः स्मृतिः

पर्यायवाचकैः शब्दैर्महानात्मा विभाव्यते
तं जानन्ब्राह्मणो विद्वान्न प्रमोहं निगच्छति

MN DUTT: 09-208-002

महानात्मा मतिर्विष्णुर्जिष्णुः शम्भुश्च वीर्यवान्
बुद्धिः प्रज्ञोपलब्धिश्च तथा ख्यातिधृतिः स्मृतिः
पर्यायवाचकैः शब्दैर्महानात्मा विभाव्यते
तं जानन् ब्राह्मणो विद्वान् प्रमोहं नाधिगच्छति

M. N. Dutt: The Great Soul has these synonymous words, the Great Soul, Intelligence, Vishnu, Jishnu, Shambhu of great valour, the Understanding, the means of acquiring knowledge, the means of perception, as also fame, courage, and memory. Knowing this, a learned Brahmana has never to meet with delusion.

सर्वतःपाणिपादश्च सर्वतोक्षिशिरोमुखः
सर्वतःश्रुतिमाँल्लोके सर्वं व्याप्य स तिष्ठति

सर्वत:पाणिपादश्च सर्वतोऽक्षिशिरोमुखः
सर्वत:श्रुतिमाँल्लोके सर्वं व्याप्य स तिष्ठति

M. N. Dutt: It has hands and feet on every side. It has ears on every side. It pervades every thing in the universe.

महाप्रभार्चिः पुरुषः सर्वस्य हृदि निश्रितः
अणिमा लघिमा प्राप्तिरीशानो ज्योतिरव्ययः

MN DUTT: 09-208-004

महाप्रभावः पुरुषः सर्वस्य हृदि निश्चितः
अणिमा लघिमा प्राप्तिरीशानो ज्योतिरव्ययः

M. N. Dutt: Of great power, that Being is stationed in the heart of all. Minuteness. Lightness, and Affluence, are his. His is the hard of all, and at one with effulgence, and knows not decay.

तत्र बुद्धिमतां लोकाः संन्यासनिरताश्च ये
ध्यानिनो नित्ययोगाश्च सत्यसंधा जितेन्द्रियाः

ज्ञानवन्तश्च ये केचिदलुब्धा जितमन्यवः
प्रसन्नमनसो धीरा निर्ममा निरहंकृताः
विमुक्ताः सर्व एवैते महत्त्वमुपयान्ति वै

तत्र बुद्धिविदो लोकाः सद्भावनिरताश्च ये
ध्यानिनो नित्ययोगाश्च सत्वसंधा जितेन्द्रियाः
ज्ञानवन्तश्च ये केचिदलुब्धा जितमन्यवः
प्रसन्नमनसो धीरा निर्ममा निरहंकृताः

MN DUTT: 09-208-006

विमुक्ताः सर्व एवैते महत्त्वमुपयान्त्युत
आत्मनो महतो वेद यः पुण्यां गतिमुत्तमाम्

M. N. Dutt: In Him are all those who comprehend the nature of the understanding, all those who are devoted to goodness of disposition, all those who practise meditation, who are always devoted to Yoga, who are firm in truth. who have governed their senses, who are gifted with knowledge, who are freed from cupidity, who have conquered anger, who are of cheerful hcarts, who are gifted with wisdom, who are liberated from ideas of mine and thine, and who are devoid of cgoism. All these, shorn of all attachments attain to the status of Greatness. That, person who understands that holy and high goal, viz., the Great Soul becomes freed from delusion.

आत्मनो महतो वेद यः पुण्यां गतिमुत्तमाम्
स धीरः सर्वलोकेषु न मोहमधिगच्छति
विष्णुरेवादिसर्गेषु स्वयंभूर्भवति प्रभुः

अहंकारात् प्रसूतानि पहाभूतानि पञ्च वै
पृथिवी वायुराकाशमायो ज्योतिश्च पञ्चमम्

M. N. Dutt: From Egoison were, indeed, born the five great elements. They are earth, air, ether, water and light numbering the fifth.

तेषु भूतानि युज्यन्ते महाभूतेषु पञ्चसु
ते शब्दस्पर्शरूपेषु रसगन्धक्रियासु च

M. N. Dutt: In these five great elements, in the matter of the operations of sound, touch, colour, taste, and smell, all creatures become deluded.

महाभूतविनाशान्ते प्रलये प्रत्युपस्थिते
सर्वप्राणभृतां धीरा महदुत्पद्यते भयम्

M. N. Dutt: When at the close of the destruction of the grcat elements, the dissolution of the universe comes, O wisemen, a great fear possesses all living creatures. However, the man with self realisation and bold enough remains undeviated to that circumstances.

एवं हि यो वेद गुहाशयं प्रभुं; नरः पुराणं पुरुषं विश्वरूपम्
हिरण्मयं बुद्धिमतां परां गतिं; स बुद्धिमान्बुद्धिमतीत्य तिष्ठति

MN DUTT: 09-208-010

विष्णुरेवादिसर्गेषु स्वयम्भूर्भवति प्रभुः
एवं हि यो वेद गुहाशय प्रभु परं पुराणं पुरुष विश्वरूपम्
हिरण्मयं बुद्धिमतां परां गतिं स बुद्धिमान् बुद्धिमतीत्य तिष्ठति

M. N. Dutt: The self-create Vishnu becomes the Lord in the primary creations. He who thus knows the Lord lying in the cave, the Supreme, Ancient Being, of universal form, the golded one, the highest goal of all persons gifted with understanding, that intelligent man lives, transcending the understanding.
