M. N. Dutt: Why, O Satvata, without observing the Kshatriya duties as formerly laid down by the gods, have you taken to the practices of robbers?

M. N. Dutt: How can a wise person, practising the Kshatriya duties, strike in battle one who runs away or is helpless or has laid aside his weapons or who begs (for his life)?

M. N. Dutt: O Satvata, it is said that among the Vrishnis there are two principal and mighty car-warriors in battle, namely, the highly highly energetic Pradyumna and yourself.

M. N. Dutt: Why then did you practise such a cruelty and commit such an act, that would lead to your downfall, towards one that had sat in prayer and whose arms had been cut-off by Partha?

M. N. Dutt: 0 wicked one, suffer (now) the consequences of that act of yours in battle. Exerting my strength, O fool, I will today cutoff your head with arrows?

M. N. Dutt: O Satvata, I swear by my two sons, by what is dear to me and by the virtuous deeds, if before this night comes to a close I fail to destroy you, you that so much pride on your heroism, together with your sons and younger brothers, unless you are backed up by fishnu, the son of Pritha, then, O wretch of Vrishnis, may I fall into dreadful hell.

M. N. Dutt: The highly powerful Somadatta, excited with wrath, having said thus, blew loudly (his) conch and sent forth roars like a lion.

M. N. Dutt: Then the greatly powerful Satyaki endued with eyes (beautiful) as lotus petals and possessed of leonine teeth greatly enraged thus addressed Somadatta.

M. N. Dutt: "O descendant of the Kurus, I entertain not the least fear in my heart whether fighting with you or with others.

M. N. Dutt: I shall not experience the slightest pain, even if backed up by all your forces you fight with me, Oscion of the Kuru race.

M. N. Dutt: Observant of the practices of the Kshatriyas as I am, I can to be terrified with words smelling of battle and insulting to the virtuous.

M. N. Dutt: If, O lord of men, you are desirous of fighting with me, strike me with sharpened arrows and I also will strike you (in return).

M. N. Dutt: O king, your son, the mighty car-warrior Bhurisrava has been slain. Then the heroic Shala and Vrisena too have been destroyed.

M. N. Dutt: I will today destroy you also together with your sons and friends, you are a descendant of the Kuru race and are endued with great prowess. Now remain carefully in battle.

M. N. Dutt: King Yudhishthira is always characterised by charity, self-restraint, purity, absence of cruelty, modesty, intelligence and forgiveness and all (the virtuous) that do not perish.

M. N. Dutt: You, who have been already slain by the energy of that one who standard bears the mark of a drum, will be destroyed in battle together with Shakuni and Soubala.

M. N. Dutt: I swear today by Krishna's feet and all the meritorious acts that I had done before, that I will wrathfully kill you in battle together with your sons, with arrows.

M. N. Dutt: If, however, you run away (from the field), you may be freed (from me).' Thus addressing each other, with eyes reddened with rage.

M. N. Dutt: Those two foremost of men began to discharge arrows (at each other, Then with a thousand cars and ten thousand cars and ten thousand horses.

M. N. Dutt: Duryodhana stood surrounding Somadatta. Shakuni, too excited with wrath and armed with all the weapons.

M. N. Dutt: And gifted with wisdom and who had with him one hundred thousand steeds of best breed, completely hemmed in that mighty bowman Somadatta.

M. N. Dutt: Supported by those heroes, (Somadatta) covered Satyaki with arrows. Seeing him covered with straight arrows,

M. N. Dutt: Dhristadyumna, followed by a large army, proceeded wrathfully (towards him). Like the roar of waters dashed into fury by a terrible hurricane.

M. N. Dutt: Carried away the heroic and mighty carwarrior Somadatta from (the field of) battle. Beholding him deprived of senses and afflicted with the arrows of Yuyudhana.

M. N. Dutt: Drona desirous of slaying the heroic (Yadu rushed (at him). Seeing (i.e. Drona advance), Yudhishthira (putting himself) at the head (of his troops).

M. N. Dutt: With the desire of rescuing the high-souled perpetuator of the Yadu race surrounded him on all sides. Then there commenced a battle between Drona and the Pandavas,

M. N. Dutt: That mighty armed one (then pierced) each of (the five) sons of Draupadi with five arrows, Virata the king of Matsyas with eight, Drupada with ten darts.

M. N. Dutt: Yudhamanu with three and Uttamanja with six (arrows) in that battle. (Similarly) piercing many other soldiers (he) rushed against Yudhishthira.

M. N. Dutt: (Thus) struck by Drona, the troops of the son of Pandu with loud wails fled away in terror in ten directions, O king.

M. N. Dutt: Seeing that are army was being slaughtered by Drona, Phalguna Partha, enraged a little, advanced speedily against his preceptor.

M. N. Dutt: O king, beholding that Drona too was advancing against Vibhatsu in that battle, the soldiers of Yudhishthira rallied again.

M. N. Dutt: Then again commenced a battle between the sons of Bharadvaja and the Pandavas. Drona, O king, completely surrounded by your sons.

M. N. Dutt: Began to destroy the troops of the Pandavas, as fire (consumes) a heap of cotton. (He then) looked like the radiant sun and was endued with the resplendence of a blazing fire.

M. N. Dutt: O king, seeing Drona incessantly discharge fierce arrows like sparks of fire from his bow drawn to a circle and like the scorching sun.

M. N. Dutt: Consume the evenings there was none among the arıny that could withstand him. Those persons who stood before Drona (in order to resist him).

M. N. Dutt: Had their heads cut-off by Drona with arrows which (then) entered into the earth. The army of the Pandavas thus slaughtered by that high-souled one.

M. N. Dutt: Again ran away in terror (even) in the very sight of Savyasachi. Seeing his lines broken by Drona at (that) night, O Bharata.

M. N. Dutt: Jishnu said to Govinda "proceed towards the car of Drona.” Then that Dasarha (chief) drove the horses, looking like silver or milk of cows or like the Kunda flower, towards the car of Drona. Sceing that Phalguna was proceeding towards Drona, Bhimasena too.

M. N. Dutt: Ordered his own charioteer to take him towards Drona's troops. Visaka (the charioteer of Bhima), hearing those words of his (master) guided the steeds.

M. N. Dutt: Behind Jishnu of unerring aim, O foremost of the Bharatas. Seeing those two brothers resolutely rush towards Drona's division.

M. N. Dutt: The Panchalas, the Srinjayas, the Matsyas, the Chedis, the Kauravas, the Kosalas and those mighty car-warriors, the Keykayas followed suit, O great king.

M. N. Dutt: Then, O king, ensued a dreadful encounter, making the hair stand erect. Vivastsu, then, attacked the right and Vrikodara the left flank of your army with innumerable cars. Seeing those two foremost of men, viz., Bhimasena and Dhananjaya, (proceed towards Drona's troops).

M. N. Dutt: Dhristadyumna as well as the highly powerful Satyaki rushed (at them) like the roar of waters dashed into fury by a terrible hurricane.

M. N. Dutt: There arose a great tumult among the combatants striking each other. Seeing Satyaki in battle and enraged at the slaughter of the son of Somadatta,

M. N. Dutt: The son of Drona rushed furiously against Satvatta at the van of battle. (Seeing) him proceed towards the car of the grandson of Sini in battle.

M. N. Dutt: Seeing Gatotkacha, the lord of the Rakshasas endued with splendour and capable of striking terror into foes, advance upraising his great bow.

M. N. Dutt: Your son's forces struck with panic became as much agitated as when the waves of Ganga (dashed into fury) by a tempest are agitated into whirlpools.

M. N. Dutt: Struck with panic by the leonine roars sent forth by Ghatotkacha, the elephants began to pass urine and the kings were greatly distressed.

M. N. Dutt: Hurled by the Rakshasa who became more powerful on night-fall, there began to fall from all sides showers of stones on the ground.

M. N. Dutt: Showers of iron, wheels, Bhushundis, arrows, spears, Sataghness and axes also began to fall there incessantly.

M. N. Dutt: Seeing that furious and terrible battle the kings, your sons and Karna too, being (greatly) distressed, ran away from the battle field).

M. N. Dutt: There the haughty son, of Drona only proud of his prowess in weapons, stood without fear (and he) soon did away with the illusion created by Ghatotkacha.

M. N. Dutt: Enraged at the illusion being dispelled (by the son of Drona), Ghatotkacha began to discharge fierce arrows. Those (arrows) penetrated into (the body of) Asvatthama. As snakes insensible with rage furiously (enter into) an ant-hill, those arrows penetrating through (the body of) the son of Saradvata became covered with blood. And then speedily entered into the earth like serpents (entering) an ant-hill. The lighthanded and powerful Ashvatthama too, excited with wrath. Furiously pierced Ghatotkacha with ten arrows. Deeply pierced in the vital parts by the son of Drona, Ghatotkacha. Became greatly afflicted and then took up a wheel furnished with one hundred thousand spokes. (this wheel) the edge of which was sharp as that of a razor and which was as resplendent as the morning sun and was studded with gems and precious stones. Was hurled by the son of Bhimasena at Ashvatthama with the desire of slaying (him). cut-off into fragments by the son of Drona with arrows as it coursed with great speed (towards him). If fell down on the ground like the purposes of an unlucky person. Seeing his wheel cut down, Ghatotkacha speedily. Covered the son of Drona with shafts as Sarbhanu (i.e. Rahu) swallows the creator of light (i.e. the sun). The resplendent son of Ghatotkacha resembling a mass of antimony. Arrested the advance of the son of Drona as the king of mountains (checks the career of) the wind. (Struck with arrows) by the heroic Anjanaparva, the grandson of Bhimasena. (The son of Drona) looked like the mountain Meru drenched with (copious) showers of rain from the clouds. Ashvatthama also endued with a prowess equal to that of Rudra or Upendra, becoming highly enraged. Cut off the standard of Anjanaparva with one arrow, his two charioteers with two and his Trivenduka with four (arrows). With one (arrow) he cut-off his bow and with four his four steeds. Deprived of his car, as he (i.e. the son of Ghatotkach) took up a scimitar studded with golden stars, in his hand and flourished it, (Ashvatthama) severed it into two parts of by a keen dart. Then, O king, the grandson of Hidimva speedily (took up) a mace decked with gold; And whirling it, (he) hurled (that mace at Ashvatthama). But the son of Drona, striking it (with arrows) filled it (to the ground). Then, leaping up in the air and roaring like black clouds, Anjaniparva began to pour down son showers of trees from the firmament. Then the son of Drona began to pierce that one capable of (creating) illusions by means of shafts in the sky as the sun (pierces) the clouds with his rays. Seated on his car again decked with gold, when that one of great strength. Looking like a high and beautiful mountain of antimony, descended to the earth, the son of Drona slew th the of Bhima's son, Anjanaparva, clad in armour as Maheshvara (killed) the Asura) Andhaka in days of yore. Seeing his son of enormous strength killed Ashvatthama.

M. N. Dutt: “What! Am I like a common individual, unable to fight, O son of Drona, that you are terrifying me with words? These words of yeurs are (highly) improper.

In consequence of the sparks emitted forth by the clash of weapons, it seemed. That the firmament was studded with glowworms during the night. Beholding his illusion destroyed by the son of Drona, proud (of his prowess) in battle. Ghatotkacha then disappeared from view again and created (another) illusion (by virtue of this new illusion); he assumed the shape of a towering mountain abounding with peaks and trees. And having a great fountain of water from which spears, lances, swords and heavy clubs, flowed incessantly. The son of Drona, beholding that mountain looking like a mass of antimony. From which innumerable weapons were being rained down, was not at all afflicted. The son of Drona, then, as if with a smile, invoked into existence the weapon of Bajra. By means of that weapon he soon destroyed that prince of mountains. Then he (i.e., Ghatotkacha) wearing the shape of a blue cloud adorned with rain-bow in the firmament. Covered the son of Drona with furious showers of stones in battle. Thereupon, aiming ihe Vayavya weapon, that foremost of those skilled in weapons (viz.,) The son Drona destroyed that rising blue cloud covering all points completely with numerous arrows, the son of Drona. That foremost of two-legged creatures. destroyed one hundred thousand cars. He (then) saw Ghatotkach come again fearlessly on a car bending his bow and surrounded by a host of Rakshasas, resembling (in shape) lions and tigers, endued with the prowess of infuriated elephants.

M. N. Dutt: And Kamalaksha, Parakrathi, Jayadharma, Sudarsana-(all) these will follow you together with sixty thousand infantry.

M. N. Dutt: Destroy, O uncle, Bhima, the twins (i.e., Nakula and Sahadeva) as well the Dharmaraj, as the Asuras. My hope of success lies in you.

M. N. Dutt: (They) are already deeply wounded, their bodies are mangled with shafts by the son of Drona. O uncle, (now) destroy the sons of Kunti, as the son of Agni (i.e., Kartikeya) slew the Asuras.

M. N. Dutt: Thus spoken to by your son, the son of Subala, desirous of doing your son good, marched quickly, O king, for the purpose of destroying the Pandavas.

M. N. Dutt: Then commenced on that night a dreadful encounter between the son of Drona and the Rakshasas (Ghatotkacha) like that (which had taken place in days of yore) between Shakra and Prahrada.

M. N. Dutt: Then Ghatatkacha, excited with, anger struck the son of the daughter of Goutama on the chest with ten strong arrows (fierce) like the venom or the fire.

M. N. Dutt: Deeply wounded by those arrows sent by the son of Bhima, he (i.e., Ashvatthama), like a tree shaken by the tempest trembled on the terrace of his car.

M. N. Dutt: Again by means of a broad-headed shaft, Ghatotkacha soon cut-off that highly lustrous bow wielded by the son of Drona.

M. N. Dutt: Then taking up another strong bow capable of sustaining a great strain, the son of Drona poured showers of keen arrows as the clouds (pour down) showers of rain.

M. N. Dutt: Then, O Bharata, the son of Saradvati sent gold winged and sky-ranging destructive of foes against that ranger of the sky.

M. N. Dutt: That great host of the broad-chested Rakshasas, sore oppressed with his arrows, looked like a herd of furious elephants attacked) by a lion.

M. N. Dutt: Like the god Agni consuming the creatures at the end of a Yoga, he began to consume with his arrows the Rakshasas together with (their) horses, charioteers, cars and elephants. arrows

M. N. Dutt: Consuming one Akshauhini of Rakshasa troops with his shafts, he shone like the divine Maheshvara in heaven when the latter had burnt down (the chief of) Tripura in days of yore.

M. N. Dutt: Having consumed the hostile forces, the son of Drona, the forernost of victors, shone like the resplendent Agni burning all the creatures at the end of a Yuga.

M. N. Dutt: Then Ghatotkacha, greatly enraged ordered that vast army of Rakshasas capable of achieving terrible feats, to slay the son of Drona.

M. N. Dutt: In obedience to that order of Ghatotkacha, the Rakshasas, possessed of blazing teeth, large faces and terrible features, capable of causing dread.

M. N. Dutt: Having gaping mouths, long tongues and eyes burning in ire, causing the earth to tremble with great leonine roars.

M. N. Dutt: And wielding several (sorts of) weapons rushed to slay the son of Drona. These Rakshasas, of gigantic strength and with eyes reddened with wrath, began to shower upon the head of the son of Drona hundreds and thousands of awfully terrible darts, Sataghness, spiked maces, Asanis, lances, axes, scimitars, maces, Bhindipalas, heavy clubs, battle axes, spears, swords, lances, Kunapas, polished Kampanas, sthulas, Bhushundees, stones. vessels of treacle, sthunas made of black iron and clubs (all) destructive of foes.

M. N. Dutt: Seeing that dreadful shower of weapons was falling upon the head of the son of Drona your warriors were greatly distressed (at heart).

M. N. Dutt: (But) Drona's son dauntlessly baffled that dreadful and impending shower of weapons by means of his own shafts, hard as the thunderbolt and sharpened on stones.

M. N. Dutt: Then that high-minded son, of Drona, quickly destroyed the Rakshasas with other gold winged shafts inspired with the mantras of celestial weapons.

M. N. Dutt: The broad chested Rakshasa army, crushed by his arrows, looked like a herd of furious elephants oppressed by lions.

M. N. Dutt: Sore oppressed by the son of Drona those Rakshasas, endued with enormous strength, became mad with rage and angrily rushed against Drona's son in order to slay him.

M. N. Dutt: There, 0 Bharata, the son of Drona displayed such wonderful exploits as are incapable of being achieved by any other being among all the creatures.

M. N. Dutt: In as much as single-handed the son of Drona, versed in great weapons, by means of blazing darts, burnt that Rakshasa ariny in a moment in the very presence of the Rakshasa king.

M. N. Dutt: The son of Drona, while (thus burning that Rakshasa host in battle shone like the Samvartaka fire (consuming) all the creatures at the end of a Yuga.

M. N. Dutt: While engaged in consuming the forces with arrows (fierce) as poisonous snakes, among those thousands of kings on the side of the Pandavas, OBharata.

M. N. Dutt: None else could look at the son of Drona in that encounter except Ghatotkacha, the heroic and highly powerful king of the Rakshasas.

M. N. Dutt: Filled with ire on beholding them, Bhima, aiming at each of them one after the other, struck each of them in the vital parts with arrows capable of bearing much strain.

M. N. Dutt: Then the renowned brother of Karna, Vrikaratha by name, pierced Bhima with arrows. (But) that hero (i.e., Bhima) soon slew him.

M. N. Dutt: Then Yudhishthira began angrily to crush borm (Drona) and in that of your sons, O sinless one.

M. N. Dutt: (And) in that battle Yudhishthira sent to the region of Death, the Ambhastas, the Malavas, the heroic Trigartas and the Sivis.

M. N. Dutt: Chopping off the Abhishahas, the Surasenas, the Valhikas and the Vashatikas, he made the earth muddy with (their) flesh and blood.

M. N. Dutt: (And), O king, in a moment he sent to the region of Yama, with a number of darts, the heroic Youdheyas, the Malavas and hosts of the Madrakas in battle.

M. N. Dutt: Then a tumultuous uproar (such as) “Slay, seize, capture, pierce and cut to pieces”-arose in the direction of Yudhishthira's car.

M. N. Dutt: Seeing Yudhishthira afflict your troops Drona, urged on by your son surrounded him (i.e. Yudhishthira) with arrows.

M. N. Dutt: Devoted to the welfare of your son, called into existence the weapons presided over by Varuna or Prajapati, in order to slay the son of Dharma, O Bharata.

M. N. Dutt: (Then) the lord of the Kurus (i.e. Yudhishthira) walking like a lion or elephant endued with a broad chest and large red eyes and possessed of an energy not less (then that of Drona) called into existence the Mahendra weapon, by means of which he baffled the weapon of Drona.

M. N. Dutt: All those weapons of his being baffled, Drona was filled with ire; and desirous of slaying Yudhishthira, he called into existence the weapon presided over by Brahma.

M. N. Dutt: Being enveloped in a dismal darkness, we could not, then, discern anything. And, O lord of the earth, all the creatures experienced a terrible horror.

M. N. Dutt: The time is now, O you that are devoted to your friends (to seek your assistance). O Karna, save in battle all my soldiers and car warriors.

M. N. Dutt: Who are not completely hemmed in by the wrathful Panchalas and the Keykeas and the Matsyas and by the mighty car-warriors of the Pandavas who are all listening like (angry) snakes.

M. N. Dutt: These Pandavas, filled with ecstasy and desirous of victory and these numerous carwarriors of the Panchalas equal to Shakra in prowess, are (all) roaring.

M. N. Dutt: Karna said Even if Purandara himself comes here in person in order to deliver the son of Pritha, I will soon vanquish him and then slay the son of Pandu (i.e. Arjuna).

M. N. Dutt: I swear this truly. Reassure your-self O Bharata. I will destroy the sons of Pandu together with all the assembled Panchalas.

M. N. Dutt: I will secure to you victory as the son of Pavaka (i.e., Kartikeya) did to Vasava himself. In this battle which is now going on, I will do good offices to you.

M. N. Dutt: Among all the sons of Pritha. Phalguna is the most powerful. I will hurl at him the unfailing dart made by Shakra.

M. N. Dutt: When the mighty-bowman will be slain, his brothers, O bestower of honours, will either come under your away or depart to the forest again.

M. N. Dutt: O lord of the Kauravas, since I am alive you need not give way to sorrow. I will, in battle, destroy all the Pandavas joined together.

M. N. Dutt: Frequently in the presence of the Kaurava (king) you boast (of your prowess). But neither your prowess nor the result of it has ever been witnessed.

M. N. Dutt: You have been, on several occasions, seen to engage in battle with the sons of Pandu. But, charioteer's son, you have, on all those occasions, been defeated by the Pandavas.

M. N. Dutt: On the son of Dhritarashtra being taken prisoner by the Gandharvas, you yourself were the first to take to your heels although all the troops were fighting (to rescue the Kuru king).

M. N. Dutt: Again, in the city of Virata, all the assembled Kauravas as well as you, O Karna, together with your younger brother were (all) defeated by Part. a in battle.

M. N. Dutt: You are, in battle, incapable of fighting with Phalguna alone. How can you, (therefore) hope to conquer all the Pandavas together with Krishna?

M. N. Dutt: O Karna, O charioteer's son, you boast too much (of your prowess). Be engaged in fight. It is the duty of good (i.e. really brave) men to display their prowess without uttering (a single boastful word).

M. N. Dutt: By roaring like the rainless autumnal clouds, O charioteer's son, O Karna, you show that you have no worth. But the king does not understand this.

M. N. Dutt: Continue, O son Radha, to roar so long as you do not behold Partha; (for) you will cease roaring when you will see Partha near.

M. N. Dutt: Continue to roar so long as you are out of the reach of Phalguna's arrows: (for) you will cease roaring when you will see Partha near.

M. N. Dutt: It is by means of (the prowess of) their arms that the Kshyatras are heroes. The twice-born ones display their heroism by words. It is by means of this bow that Phalguna is a hero. But Karna is a hero by the wishes (he cherishes in his heart).

M. N. Dutt: Who can resist Partha that has gratified even Rudra himself?” Thus reviled by the son of Saradvat.

M. N. Dutt: Karna, the foremost of smiters, spoke these words to Kripa. Heroes always roar like clouds during the rainy season.

M. N. Dutt: And they yield an early harvest like sceds sown into the soil (at the proper time). I do not find any fault with the warriors on the field of battle.

M. N. Dutt: Boasting in several ways of themselves who bear a (great) burden in war. That person, who resolves in his mind to bear a burden.

M. N. Dutt: Is surely helped by fate in carrying out his purposes, If resolving in my mind to bear a (great) burden.

M. N. Dutt: That is (if wishing in my mind) to slay in battle the son of Pandu together with Krishna and Sattvata, I roar thus, what harm is there in it to you, O Brahmana?

M. N. Dutt: Heroes do not roar in vain like the autumnal clouds. The wise, conscious of their ownstrength, indulge in roars.

M. N. Dutt: I am, too, resolved in my mind to conquer in battle today the Pandavas and Krishna joined together, by exerting my best. O son of Goutama, it is on this account, that I indulge in roars.

M. N. Dutt: O Brahmana, witness the result of these roars of mine. Having slain in battle the sons of Pandu together with Krishna. Sattvata and (all their) followers I will deliver the (entire) earth with its thorns weeded out, to Duryodhana.

M. N. Dutt: Kripa said Your intentions being like the ravings (of a mad man) cannot be acceptable to me, inasmuch as you always tale to me, inasmuch as you always speak depreciatingly of Krishna, Arjuna and Dharmaraj, the son of Pandu.

M. N. Dutt: O Karna, victory on the part of that person is certain who has on his side Krishna and the Pandava (Arjuna) both skilled in warfare and incapable of being vanquished in battle by the celestials, the Gandharvas, the Yakshas, the mortals the Uragas and the birds (even if all these fight) with their on). Yudhishthira the son of Dharma is devoted to the Brahmanas, (always) speaks truth, is selfrestrained, worships the Pitris and the celestials, is devoted to truth and righteousness, well skilled in weapons, is possessed of intelligence and is grateful.

M. N. Dutt: His brother (also) are powerful, well-skilled in all the weapons, devoted to the ministrations of their elders, wise, renowned and (they) always practice righteousness.

M. N. Dutt: His relations and kinsmen too are powerful as Indra himself, are devotedly attached (to him) and (efficient) smiters. Dhristadyumna, Sikhandi and Janamejaya, the son of Durmuksha. armoirs are

M. N. Dutt: And Chandrasena, Bhadrasena, Kirtivarma, Dhruva, Dhara, Vasuchandra, Damachandra, Singha-Chandra, sutejana.

M. N. Dutt: And the sons of Drupada and Drupada himself skilled in great weapons and the king of Matsya together with his younger brothers are exerting their utmost on their behalf.

M. N. Dutt: And Gajaneeka, Srutaneeka, Veerabhadra, Sudrasana, Srutadhvaja, Valaneeka, Jayaneeka, Jarapreya and Vijaya, Labdhalaksha, Jayasva, Rathavahana, Chandradaya, Kamaratha, the auspicious brothers of Virata,

M. N. Dutt: And the twins, the (five) sons of Draupadi and the Rakshasa Ghatotkacha are fighting for their sake. They (therefore) cannot meet with destruction.

M. N. Dutt: These and innumerable numbers of other kinsmen and relations) are on the side of the son of Pandu. Indeed, Bhima and Phalguna, by ineans of the prowess of their weapons, can easily destroy the whole universe together with all the celestials, the Asuras, the human beings and the Rakshasas, (other) created beings, the serpents and the elephants.

M. N. Dutt: Yudhishthira, also by means of his angry looks, can consume the (whole). O Karna, how can you hope to vanquish these enemies in battle, for whose sake Souri of unrivaled prowess has armed himself? It is indeed a great impudence on your part, OCharioteer's son, as you always dare confronting Souri in battle.

M. N. Dutt: Sanjaya said Thus spoken to (by Kripa), Karna the son of Radha then replied smilingly to the preceptor Kripa, the son of Saradvat.

M. N. Dutt: “O Brahmana, the words that you have (just) spoken about the Pandavas are true. Indeed the sons of Pandu are gifted with these and many other noble qualities.

M. N. Dutt: The sons of Pritha are unconquerable in battle by the celestials together with Vasava (at their head), by the Yakshas, the Daityas and the Gandharvas (all) united together and by the Pishachas, the Urages and the Rakshasas.

M. N. Dutt: Still I will vanquish the Parthas by means of the dart granted to me by Vasava. This unfailing dart was given to me, O twice-born one, by Shakra.

M. N. Dutt: By means of this dart I will slay Savyasachi in battle. When this son of Pandu will be slain, Krishna, as will as his uterine brothers (i.e., Yudhishthira and Bhima).

M. N. Dutt: Will not able to enjoy the earth without Arjuna. At the destruction of all these, this, earth together with her seas.

M. N. Dutt: Will come under the sway of the lord the Kurus without any trouble (on his part), O son of Goutama. There is no doubt that in this world, a sound policy leads to success in everything.

M. N. Dutt: Well aware of this (to be certain) I give forth (these) roar. O Goutama, you are much advanced in years, a Brahmana and unskillful in battle.

M. N. Dutt: It is on account of your affection towards the sons of Pritha that you insult me (thus). If, O twice-born one, you speak such disagreeable words to me, as these again.

M. N. Dutt: Then taking up my scimitar I will cut-off your tongue, O wretch. O Brahmana, you are desirous of praising the Pandavas, in battle.

M. N. Dutt: In order to strike terror into the hearts of) all the troops and the Kauravas, O evil-minded one, O son of Goutama, hear what I say on this point.

M. N. Dutt: Where Duryodhana, Drona, Shakuni, Durmukha, Jaya, Dusasana, Vrishasena, the king Madra and yourself.

M. N. Dutt: And Somadatta, Bhuri, the son of Drona and Vivingsati-all well-skilled in warfare, remain (prepared for battle) with their armours on.

M. N. Dutt: Can any foe, be he as powerful as Shakra himself, vanquish all these (heroes) in battle? All these warriors that are heroes, efficient in weapons, endued with strength, desirous of attaining the hcaven.

M. N. Dutt: Conversant with religion and well skilled in battle, would slay the very gods in battle. These will remain on the field of battle for the purpose of destroying the Pandavas.

M. N. Dutt: With their armours on, for the Kaurava king, solicitous of victory I deem victory even with regard to those endued with great prowess to be dependent on fate.

M. N. Dutt: Since the mighty-armed Bhisma lies (on the field) struck by a hundred arrows, (and since) Vikarna, Chitrasena, Valhika, Jayadratha.

M. N. Dutt: And Bhurisrava, Jaya, Jalasandha, Sudakshina, Sala, the foremost of car-warriors, the puissant Bhagadatta.

M. N. Dutt: These and numerous other heroes difficult of be being vanquished by the very gods and more powerful than the Pandavas themselveslie slain in battle.

M. N. Dutt: To what do you, that are the basest of men, attribute all this except the hand of fate? O twice-born one, as to the enemies, Duryodhana whom you always extol.

M. N. Dutt: Hundreds and thousands of warriors on their side also have been destroyed. The troops of both the Kurus and the Pandavas are diminishing.

M. N. Dutt: I do not see in it any prowess on the part of the Pandavas. Those whom you, you that are the basest of men, always deem powerful.

M. N. Dutt: I will confront in battle putting forth my utmost prowess for the welfare of Duryodhana. As regards success, it is dependent on fate.

M. N. Dutt: Sanjaya said Seeing his maternal uncle thus insulted by the charioteer's son, the son of Drona brandishing his scimitar ran furiously towards him.

M. N. Dutt: Then, excited with a great rage, the son of Drona, like a lion (rushing at) an infuriate elephant, rushed against Karna, even in the Very presence of the Kuru king. are of very very wicked

M. N. Dutt: Ashvatthama said O basest of men, in spite of his speaking of the qualities that Arjuna is really endowed with, you, that understanding, have insulted my heroic maternal uncle through (sheer) malice.

M. N. Dutt: Without reckoning any of the words of bowmen in battle, puffed up with pride as you are, you are boasting today of your manliness.

M. N. Dutt: Where was your prowess and where your weapons, when defeating you in battle, the wielder of Gandiva killed Jayadratha in your very presence?

M. N. Dutt: O wretch of a charioteer, you are in vain hoping in your mind to conquer him, who formerly fought with the very Mahadeva himself.

M. N. Dutt: Since the combined celestials and the Asuras headed by Indra are incapable of defeating that foremost of the wielders of weapons, having Krishna for his ally.

M. N. Dutt: How can you, O Suta, backed up by these earthly kings, indulge in hopes of vanquishing in battle, the unconquerable Arjuna, the foremost of all the heroes in the world?

M. N. Dutt: Look, O Karna of wicked understanding, O vilest of men stay here now. I will presently cut-off your head from your body.

M. N. Dutt: Sanjaya said The highly-energetic king Duryodhana himself and that best of men, Kripa, prevented him (i.e., Ashvatthama) who was rushing furiously (at Karna).

M. N. Dutt: Karna said Let this basest of Brahmanas, who (thinks that he) is a hero, boasts of his prowess in battle and is of wicked understanding, taste of my prowess. Do leave him, O best of the Kurus.

M. N. Dutt: Ashvatthama said 0 charioteer's of wicked understanding, we forgive you of this (fault). Phalguna will destroy this swelling pride of yours.

M. N. Dutt: Duryodhana said O Ashvatthama, O bestower of honours, be gratified; do forgive (him). O siniess one, you should not be angry with the charioteer's son.

M. N. Dutt: To you and Karna and Kripa and Drona and the king of Madra and to the son of Subala, a heavy task is entrusted. O best of the twiceborn ones, be gratified.

M. N. Dutt: O Brahmana, all the Pandavas, desiring to fight with and shouting to the son of Radha (to give battle) are coming (against him) from all sides.

M. N. Dutt: Sanjaya said Thus appeased by the king, the highminded son of Drona, O great king, who was filled with a furious rage subdued his anger.

M. N. Dutt: Then the large-heated preceptor, whose mild disposition soon returned (to him) an account of his being (naturally) of a peaceful

M. N. Dutt: Kripa said 0 Charioteer's of very wicked understanding, you are pardoned by us of this (fault). But Phalguna will (soon) destroy your swelling pride. son

M. N. Dutt: Sanjaya said Then, O king, the Pandavas and the renowned Panchalas, united together and sending forth thundering roars, poured in by thousands.

M. N. Dutt: The puissant and energetic Karna too taking up his bow and surrounding by the foremost of the Kauravas, like Shakra by the celestials, awaited (their charge) relying on the strength of his own arms. The battle, that then took place between Karna (on one side) and the Pandavas (on the other).

M. N. Dutt: Was hot and furious and ruining with thundering shouts, O great monarch. Then, O king, the Pandavas and and the renowned Panchalas.

M. N. Dutt: Seeing Karna, possessed of mighty arms, sent forth loud shouts. (And the said)-"This is Karna! where is Karna! O Karna, stay in this great battle.

M. N. Dutt: O wicked-souled one, O vilest of men, give us battle. Others, with eyes burning in ire on beholding Karna, said.

M. N. Dutt: This arrogant son of charioteer having but a little sense should be killed by all these foremost of kings. He has no need of life.

M. N. Dutt: This sinful person is always an inveterate enemy to the sons of Pritha, abides by the advice of Duryodhana and is the root of all these evils.

M. N. Dutt: "Slay him!” Thus saying, mighty Kshatriya car-warriors, at the command of the son of Pandu, rushed to slay the charioteer's son, enveloping (all the points) with a heavy downpour of arrows. Seeing all those highly powerful sons of Pandu (rush towards him).

M. N. Dutt: The charioteer's son was neither pained nor struck with terror. Beholding that wonderful army, vast as a sea and looking like Death itself.

M. N. Dutt: That puissant, light-handed and highly powerful one, devoted to the good of your sons and never vanquished in battle, by means of showers of arrows.

M. N. Dutt: Began to check (the career of) that army on all sides, O most exalted of the Bharatas. Then the Pandavas also, discharging downpours of shafts checked, (him).

M. N. Dutt: Shaking hundreds and thousands of bows, they battled with the son of Radha as the Daityas (fought with) Shakra in days of yore.

M. N. Dutt: That downpour, of shafts discharged by the kings on all sides, was destroyed by the puissant Karna with a heavy shower of arrows.

M. N. Dutt: Then a marvellous battle, in which each party was desirous of warding off the blows of the other and which resembled the fight between Shakra and the Danavas in the war between the gods and the Asuras, took place between them. arrows

M. N. Dutt: There we beheld of wonderful lighthandness of the charioteer's son : for, all the hostile forces, exerting their utmost, could not subdue him in that battle.

M. N. Dutt: That mighty car-warrior, the son of Radha, checking those downpours of discharged by the (hostile) kings, shot at their yokes, umbrellas, cars and steeds, dreadful arrows, marked with his own name. Then, afflicted by Karna and not knowing what to do, those (hostile) kings.

M. N. Dutt: Wandered about there on the field of battle) like cows pained with cold. Innumerable horses, elephants and car-warriors afflicted by Karna were seen to drop dead there. The entire field was strewn on all sides with the fallen heads and arms of the unretreating warriors, O king, with the dead and the dying and the waiting (combatants) lying on all sides.

M. N. Dutt: The field of battle looked like the region of the son of Vivasvata, O king. Then, 0 monarch, beholding the feats of Karna, Duryodhana.

M. N. Dutt: Approached Ashvatthama and then said these words-"Yonder Karna, with his armour on, is seen (fighting) with all the (hostile) kings.

M. N. Dutt: Behold, the (enemy's) army, oppressed with the arrows of Karna, is, like the Asura force afflicted by Kartikeya, running away in all the directions).

M. N. Dutt: Witnessing the defeat of his army by the intelligent Karna, Vibhatsu, in order to slay the charioteer's son, is advancing (against him).

M. N. Dutt: Adopt such measures that the son of Pandu may not kill that mighty car-warrior, i.e., the charioteer's son in battle in our very sight."

M. N. Dutt: (Hearing these words of the king), the son of Drona and Kripa and Shalya and that mighty car-warrior, the son of Hridika, advanced against Partha in order to protect the charioteer's son.

M. N. Dutt: Seeing that the son of Kunti was coming against them like Shakra against the Daitya force. Then, O king of kings Vibhatsu also surrounded by the Panchalas marched against Karna like Purandara (marching against) Vritra.

M. N. Dutt: Dhritarashtra said Seeing the wrathful Phalguna looking like Yama, the destroyer of time, what measures, O charioteer, did Karna, the son of Vikartana, adopt?

M. N. Dutt: That mighty car-warrior (i.e. Karna) always challenged Partha and hoped that he has powerful enough to vanquish Vibhatsu.

M. N. Dutt: Thus meeting all on a sudden his inveterate enemy, what measures, O charioteer, did Karna, the son of Vikartana adopt?

M. N. Dutt: Sanjaya said Seeing the son of Pandu (advance against) his rival elephant, Karna dauntlessly fell upon Dhananjaya.

M. N. Dutt: Partha then enveloped Karna who was thus furiously advancing against him, with straightcoursing arrows furnished with golden wings.

M. N. Dutt: (And) the son of Pandu covered Karna with a dense shower of arrows. Then Karna greatly excited with rage pierced him with three darts,

M. N. Dutt: The mighty car-warrior (Partha) witnessing this nimbleness on his part could not endure it. That scorcher of foes, then, shot thirty arrows sharpened on stone, having flaming points and coursing straight, at the charioteer's son. That puissant and mighty one, then, as if with a smile, pierced him angrily with another long arrow in the end of his left arms. From that hand of his which was (thus) pierced with (great) force, his bow fell down.

M. N. Dutt: Taking up that bow within half the time of the twinking of an eye, that highly powerful one, with great nibleness of hand, covered Phalguna with downpours of arrows.

M. N. Dutt: The arrowy shower, sent forth by the charioteer's son, was baffled by Dhananjaya with discharges of arrows, as if with a smile, O Bharata.

M. N. Dutt: Those two mighty wielders of bow desiring to baffle each other and coming up to catch each other enveloped each other with a (perfect) deluge of arrows.

M. N. Dutt: Then a marvellous encounter took place between Karna and the of Pandu resembling that between two wild elephants for the sake of a she-elephant in the time of her passion.

M. N. Dutt: Then that mighty bowman Partha, witnessing the prowess of Karna, speedily cutoff that part of his bow at which it is grasped.

M. N. Dutt: (And) that scorcher of (his) foes (i.e. Dhananjaya) sent his horses to the abode of Yama with broad headed shafts and severed the head of his charioteer from the body. son

M. N. Dutt: Then Partha, the son of Pandu pierced that one (i.e., Karna) deprived on his steeds and driver and whose bow was cut-off with four arrows.

M. N. Dutt: Afflicted with arrows of Kripa that foremost of men jumped down from the car of which the steeds were slain, quickly got up to another car.

M. N. Dutt: Afflicted with (Arjuna's) darts, that most exalted of men hastily jumped down from his steedless car and got up to the car of Kripa.

M. N. Dutt: 0 best of the Bharatas, witnessing the defeat of the son of Radha, your Partisans, (already) mangled by the shafts of Dhananjaya ran away in ten directions.

M. N. Dutt: Beholding that they were running away King Duryodhana himself rallied them and spoke these words.

M. N. Dutt: Heroes, do not take to flight! O best of the Kshatriyas, stay! I am myself going against Partha in order to slay him in battle.

M. N. Dutt: I will myself destroy Partha together with the Panchalas assembled (under his banners). In the battle that I will today fight with the wielder of Gandiva.

M. N. Dutt: The son of Pritha will behold my prowess resembling that of the destroyer at the end of a Yuga. Today the arrowy showers that I will discharge by thousands.

M. N. Dutt: in battle, will be seen by the sons of Pritha to resemble (thick) flights of locusts. Today, when wielding my bow, I will continue to rain down arrows.

M. N. Dutt: My soldiers will behold me like a cloud discharging torrents of rain at the end of the summer. Today I will, by means of straight arrows, conquer the sons of Pritha.

M. N. Dutt: Brave warriors, stay in battle. Shake off your fear of Phalguni. Encountering my prowess, Phalguni will not be able to stand it.

M. N. Dutt: As the ocean, the abode of the Makaras reaching the point between the high and the low tide-marks, is unable to get beyond it. Saying this, the king, surrounded by a mighty army, marched.

M. N. Dutt: Furiously with his eyes reddened in wrath, against Phalguni. Seeing that mighty-armed one advance (against Arjuna), the son of Saradvatta (i.e. Kripa).

M. N. Dutt: Approaching Ashvatthama said these words-"This mighty-armed king, under the influence of rage and insensible with ire.

M. N. Dutt: Resorting to the practices of the insects, (which heedless of danger rush into fire) is desiring to fight with Arjuna (heedless of his life). Prevent the Kaurava king (from doing this) before he sacrifices his life in our very sight by encountering Partha in battle. So long as he does not present himself within the range। of Kirit's shafts.

M. N. Dutt: The heroic Kaurava king can only remain alive in battle. Prevent the king (from taking this rash step) before he is burnt to ashes by the dreadful arrows of Partha looking like snakes that have just cast off their sloughs. It looks very improper, O giver of hunours, that when we are here.

M. N. Dutt: The king will go in person to fight in battle like one having no support. I think it will be (as) greatly difficult for Kaurava king to escape with life while fighting with Kiriti in battle, as it is in the case of an elephant (fighting with) a tiger. Thus addressed by his maternal uncle, the son of Drona, who was the foremost of those that could wield weapons.

M. N. Dutt: Quickly approaching Duryodhana, said these words-"O son of Gandhari so long as I am alive, it is not proper for you to fight.

M. N. Dutt: Disregarding me who am always devoted to your welfare. O Kaurava king, you need at all be anxious for vanquishing Partha. I will myself check Partha. Stay (here), 0 Suyodhona.

M. N. Dutt: Duryodhana said The protector protects the sons of Pandu as if they were his own children. You also never manage in right earnest with my enemies.

M. N. Dutt: It is either owing to my ill luck or owing to your desire to do good to the Dharmaraj ihat your prowess diminishes in battle, though I do not know what is the true cause.

M. N. Dutt: Fie on my avaricious self on whose account all the friends, solicitous of my welfare, are, being vanquished (in battle), now experiencing great misery.

M. N. Dutt: What person is there, O son of Goutama's daughter, who though capable yet would not destroy my enemies, besides you that are the foremost of those that wield weapons and are equal to Maheshvara himself in battle.

M. N. Dutt: O Ashvatthama, be gratified. Destroy my enemies. Neither the celestials nor thc Danavas are capable of staying within the range of your weapons.

M. N. Dutt: O Drona's son, destroy the Panchalas as well as the Somakas together with all their followers. Protected by you we shall slay the rest.

M. N. Dutt: Look, O Brahmana, the Somakas and the renowned Panchalas are ranging furiously amidst my troops like a forest fire.

M. N. Dutt: O mighty-armed and most excellent of men, check the career of these and also of the Kaikayas, before, they, backed up as they are by Kiriti, destroy (all our forces).

M. N. Dutt: Ashvatthama, O chastiser of foes march (against them) speedily. Earlier or latter this take should be accomplished by you, O Brahmana.

M. N. Dutt: As, O mighty-armed one, you have sprung into existence in order to slay the Panchalas, you will surely, exerting your utmost, make the earth devoid of the Panchalas.

M. N. Dutt: It will surely come to pass as the worshipful sages who have attained (ascetic) success have said this. Therefore O most valiant of men, destroy the Panchalas together with their followers.

M. N. Dutt: Not to speak of the sons of Pritha together with the Panchalas, even the very celestials together with their allies cannot stand within the range of your weapon. I speak this truly.

M. N. Dutt: I will tell you truth, O hero, that the Pandavas together with the Somakas, are incapable of fighting with you, even though they put forth their (utmost energy).

M. N. Dutt: O mighty-armed one, go, go. Do not waste time. Your forces, afflicted with Parthas' shafts, are taking to flight.

M. N. Dutt: 0 mighty-armed one, O bestower of honours, you are (No doubt) capable, by virtue of your own celestial energy, of chastising the sons of Pandavas as well as the Panchalas.

M. N. Dutt: Sanjaya said Thus addressed by Duryodhana, the son of Drona invincible in battle, tried to destroy the enemies like Indra the Daytas.

M. N. Dutt: (And) that mighty-armed one said these words to your son. O Kaurava of mighty-arms, what you have said is indeed true.

M. N. Dutt: The sons of Pandu are always dear to me as well as to my father. Similarly, we too also dear to them. But this is otherwise in battle.

M. N. Dutt: O affectionate one, putting forth our (utmost) strength engage in fight dauntlessly regardless of our very lives. Myself we Karna, Shalya, Kripa and the son of Hridika i.e., Kritavarma.

M. N. Dutt: Can destroy the army of the Pandavas, O most excellent of kings, in the twinkling of an eye. And O best of the Kurus, O mighty armed one, they too can destroy the army of the Kauravas within the twinkling of an eye, if we are not present in battle. We are fighting with Pandavas putting forth our utmost prowess and they too are battling with us to the best of their might.

M. N. Dutt: (Therefore) one energy encountering the other is neutralising (each other). O Bharata. (We are) incapable of putting down the Pandava's army by force.

M. N. Dutt: So long as the sons of Pandu are alive. What I tell you is true. The sons of Pandu are fighting for their own sake and they are very competent also.

M. N. Dutt: Why will not they, therefore, destroy your troops, O Bharata? O descendant of Kuru, O king, you are most avaricious, deceitful.

M. N. Dutt: Self-conceited and suspicious of everybody, It is for this reason that you suspect ourselves too. O king, I deem you are a mean, wickedsouled and sinful person.

M. N. Dutt: As you are mean and your thoughts are sinful you suspect ourselves and others.

M. N. Dutt: (However) for your sake, regardless of my very life I will do my best.

M. N. Dutt: O foremost of Kurus, I am now going to fight for your sake. I will engage with your foes and destroy a large number of your enemies.

M. N. Dutt: In order to do what is agreeable to you, O chastiser of foes, I will fight with the Panchalas, the Somakas as well as with the Kaikeyas and the Pandavas, in battle.

M. N. Dutt: Today the Chedis, the Panchalas and the Somakas, scorched with my darts, like cows afflicted by a lion, will fly on all sides.

M. N. Dutt: Witnessing my prowess today, king (Yudhishthira), the son of Dharma, together with the Somakas, will deem the whole world full of Ashvatthamas.

M. N. Dutt: Beholding the destruction of the Panchalas as well well as of the Somakas in battle, Yudhishthira, the lord of Dharma, will experience a great pain.

M. N. Dutt: O Bharata, I will destroy all those that will confront me in battle. O hero, afflicted with the prowess of my arms no one shall escape.

M. N. Dutt: Having thus addressed your Duryodhana, that one, possessed of mighty arms (i.e., Ashvatthama), distressing all bow men, proceeded to battle.

M. N. Dutt: son

M. N. Dutt: (And) that foremost of those that bear life was desirous of doing what was agreeable to your sons. Then the son of Goutama's daughter said thus to the Panchalas together with the Kaikeyas.

M. N. Dutt: All of you, O mighty car-warriors, strike me in the body and displaying your dexterity in handling weapons engage in battle with calmness.

M. N. Dutt: Thus addressed (by Ashvatthama), all of them, O great monarch, began to discharge showers of weapons upon the son of Drona as clouds pour down showers of rain.

M. N. Dutt: having destroyed those (showers of weapons), the son of Drona, even in the very presence of the sons of Drona, even in the very presence of the sons of Pandu and in that of Dhristadyumna, slew ten (warriors) among them in battle,olord.

M. N. Dutt: Sore oppressed in battle, the Panchalas and the Somakas, abandoning the son of Drona, took to flight in ten directions.

M. N. Dutt: Witnessing the flight of those heroes that is, the Panchalas and the Somakas, Dhristadyumna, O great king, rushed against the son of Drona in that battle.

M. N. Dutt: Then surrounded by one hundred heroic and unretreating car-warriors riding on cars adorned with gold and the rattle of which resembled the roar of clouds full of rain.

M. N. Dutt: That great car-warrior, Dhristadyumna, the son of the king of Panchala, beholding the carnage of his warriors, said these words to the son of Drona.

M. N. Dutt: O son of the preceptor, O you that are possessed of wicked understanding, why are you slaughtering the common soldiers? If you are (really) a hero, then fight with me in battle.

M. N. Dutt: I will (surely) slay you. Now stay (here) and be quiet.” The puissant Dhristadyumna, the, struck the son of the preceptor with keen and highly dreadful arrows capable of piercing the vital parts. (And) those thick flights of arrows, moving swiftly, furnished with golden wings, having keen points and capable of riving all the parts of the body, pierced (through the body of the son of Drona like maddened black-bees seeking for honey-entering into a flowering tree.

M. N. Dutt: The proud and dauntless son of Drona, (thus) deeply pierced (with Dhristdyumna's arrows) became as enraged as a serpent crushed by foot and (then), arrow in hand, thus said

M. N. Dutt: O Dhristadyumna, wait a moment quietly before I send "you to the abode of Yama with sharpened darts."

M. N. Dutt: having thus addressed the son of Prishata, the son of Drona, the slayer of hostile heroes, like one endued with great nimbleness of hand, covered him completely with deluges of arrows.

M. N. Dutt: Thus covered (with arrows) in that battle by the son of Drona, the son of the Panchala king, invincible in battle, thundered forth these words to the son of Drona.

M. N. Dutt: O Brahmana, you are neither aware of my promise nor of my of my origin. Of wicked understanding as you are, I will slay you after killing Drona.

M. N. Dutt: I will not therefore slay you today in battle, since Drona is alive. O man of greatly vicious understanding, at the expiration of this night, when the bright dawn will appear.

M. N. Dutt: I will (first) slay your father and then send yourself too, in battle, to the abode of the departed spirits, I chariot this (thought) in my mind.

M. N. Dutt: Now assuming a quiet attitude show all your hatred towards the sons of Pritha and your devotion towards the Kauravas. You will not escape alive (from me).

M. N. Dutt: That twice-born one, who giving up the practices of the Brahmana, gives himself up to the practices of the Kshaytrias, deserves to be slain by all the Kshaytrias like you, O vilest of men."

M. N. Dutt: That foremost of the twice-born ones (i.e. Ashvatthama), thus addressed in harsh words by the son of Prishata, became terrible excited with wrath and said (to Dhristadyumna) “Wait, wait."

M. N. Dutt: (And) as if to burn the son of Prishata with his eyes, he gazed at him. Heaving sighs like a snake he covered (Dhristadyumna with arrows) in that battle.

M. N. Dutt: Though) that foremost of car-warriors, the son of Prishata, who was surrounded by all the Panchala troops, was (thus) struck with arrows by the son of Drona in that battle,

M. N. Dutt: (Yet) that mighty-armed one did not tremble; (but) resorting to his own prowess discharged at Ashvatthama numerous arrows.

M. N. Dutt: Those two (warriors), who resisted each other, baffled the arrowy showers of each other and could not tolerate each other, were engaged in the game of battle in which the wager was life itself.

M. N. Dutt: Those two mighty wielders of bow poured down showers of arrows on a sides. Beholding the fight between the son of Drona and that of one Prishata which was awe-inspiring and dreadful to look at, the Siddhas, the Charanas and the (other) sky-ranging creatures highly extolled them. Filling the firmament and (all) the directions with a downpour of arrows.

M. N. Dutt: And creating a great darkness with the shafts, they fought with another unobserved (by other combatants). As if dancing in battle and drawing their bows to circles.

M. N. Dutt: And bent on killing each other and filling all the creatures with consternation, those two mighty-armed (heroes) fought admirably and with (great nimbleness and dexterity).

M. N. Dutt: (And they) were highly adored by thousands of foremost of warriors in battle. Seeing them engaged in battle like two wild elephants (encountering each other) in the forest.

M. N. Dutt: Both the armies experienced a great delight. The soldiers emitted forth roars like lions and blew their conches.

M. N. Dutt: And sounded hundreds and thousands of musical instruments. And in that terrific battle enhancing the terror of the coward.

M. N. Dutt: The encounter (between the sons of Drona and Prishata) seemed to go on equally for a moment only. Then O mighty monarch, the son of Drona, cutting off the bow, the standard, the umbrellas, the two Parshni drivers, the charioteer and the four steeds of the highsouled son of Prishata in battle, rushed against him.

M. N. Dutt: And that one, of immeasurable soul, began ! to afflict all those Panchalas in hundreds and thousands with his straight coursing arrows. Then the arıny of the Pandavas, beholding that brilliant exploit, resembling that of Vasava, achieved by the son of Drona in battle, became greatly dejected, the most exalted of the Bharatas.

M. N. Dutt: Destroying one hundred mighty carwarriors of the Panchalas with a hundred arrows and slaying three foremost of (their) men with three sharpened arrows.

M. N. Dutt: In the very presence of Phalguna and of the son of Drupada, the son of Drona slaughtered all those Panchalas who had confronted him.

M. N. Dutt: Thus slaughtered in battle, the Panchalas together with the Srinjayas fled from the son of Drona, on their cars with their standards cut down.

M. N. Dutt: Having defeated his enemies in battle, that mighty car-warrior, the son of Drona, began to send forth thundering roars like those of the clouds at the end of summer.

M. N. Dutt: Having destroyed numerous heroes, Ashvatthama shone like the fire at the end of a Yuga after having consumed all the creatures.

M. N. Dutt: Highly adored by the Kauravas after having vanquished thousands of enemies in battle, the puissant son of Drona shone like the lord of the celestials himself after the destruction of his foes.

M. N. Dutt: Sanjaya said Then, O great monarch, king Yudhishthira and Bhimasena the son of Pandu hemmed in the son of Drona on all sides.

M. N. Dutt: King Duryodhana, then, accompanied by the son of Bharadvaja, advanced against the Pandavas in battle. Then commenced a fight.

M. N. Dutt: Terrible to look at, highly dreadful and increasing the terror of the cowards. Large numbers of the Ambhastas, the Malavas the Vangas, the Sivis and the Trigartas.

M. N. Dutt: Were wrathfully sent by Yudhishthira to the region of Death. Cutting off (into pieces) the Abhisahas, the Surasenas and (other) Kshatriyas invincible in battle Bhima made the earth muddy with blood. (And) O king the Yaudheyas, the mountaineers, the Madrakas and the Malavas.

M. N. Dutt: Were sent by the diadem-decked Shetavahana to the domains of Death. Deeply pierced with straight-coursing arrows.

M. N. Dutt: The tuskers dropped (dead) on the ground like mountain peaks, with the chopped-off trunks of elephants, still moving to and fro (in convulsions).

M. N. Dutt: The earth, being strewn all over, seemed to be full of snakes, moving about, with the fallen royal umbrellas decked with gold.

M. N. Dutt: The field, being scattered all over looked (beautiful) like the firmament studded with (innumerable) suns, moons and stars at the end of a Yuga. "Slay, strike dauntlessly, pierce and cut to pieces."

M. N. Dutt: These (and similar other) tumultuous uproars arose near the car of Shonasva (i.e. Drona). Getting terribly enraged, Drona also, by means of Vayaveya weapon, in that encounter.

M. N. Dutt: Began, like a furious hurricane (chasing away) the clouds, to destroy his enemies. (Thus slaughter by Drona, the Panchalas fled away from terror.

M. N. Dutt: In the very presence of Bhimasena and of the high-souled Partha. (Then) that one who wore a coronet (i.e. Arjuna and Bhimasena, rallying (their troops) all on a sudden.

M. N. Dutt: Attacked the large army (of Drona) with a mighty car force. Vibhatsu attacking the right and Vrikodara the left flank (of Drona's army).

M. N. Dutt: They rained upon the son of Bharadvaja two mighty downpours of arrows. Then the Srinjayas and those great car-warriors, the Panchalas.

M. N. Dutt: And the Matsyas together with the Somakas followed. In like manner, (many) car-warriors, who wore (efficient) smiters on the side of your son.

M. N. Dutt: (Followed) by a vast army, O king, proceeded towards the car of Drona. Then that Bharata army slaughtered by Kiriti (i.e., Arjuna who wore a coronet).

M. N. Dutt: (Overcome) with sleep and bewildered by darkness began once more to disperse. In spite of (the endeavours of) Drona and your son himself to prevent (their fight),

M. N. Dutt: They were unable to rally the combat ts, O mighty monarch. That vast army, slaughter with arrows by the son of Pandu.

M. N. Dutt: Took to flight in all directions when the world was enveloped in darkness. Hundreds of kings, leaving their conveyances, fled away, O great monarch, in terror, on all side.

M. N. Dutt: Thereupon, (his) charioteer drove to the battle those horses oi' Sindhu breed endowed with great fleetness, having the colour of the conch and capable of bearing all the weapons.

M. N. Dutt: Those (steeds), fleet as the mind or the wind, carried Yuyudhana (to the field of battle) as the horses of Indra, O king, had, in days of yore, born him who was preparing to slay the Asuras.

M. N. Dutt: Beholding Sattyata quickly proceed against him to battle, Somadatta, O mighty monarch, confronted him undauntedly.

M. N. Dutt: Discharging a shower of arrows as the clouds (pour down) torrents of rain, he (i.e., Somadatta) covered the grandson of Sini like the clouds (covering the sun)

M. N. Dutt: 0 best of the Bharatas, the dauntless Satyaki also completely covered that most exalted the Kurus with arrowy showers in that battle.

M. N. Dutt: Somadatta also pierced the descendant of Madhu in the chest with sixty arrows. Satyaki, too, O king, pierced him with keen darts.

M. N. Dutt: Pierced by each other with each other's arrows, they looked like two blossoming Kinsuka trees in the following season.

M. N. Dutt: With their bodies covered all over with blood, those two renowned descendants of Kuru and Vrishni eyed at each other as it (desirous of) consuming each other with their glances.

M. N. Dutt: Those two dreadful-looking grinder of foes ranging on their cars coursing in circles, looked like two clouds pouring (torrents of) rain.

M. N. Dutt: With their bodies pierced, mangled and wounded with shafts, they looked, O king of kings, like two hedge hogs.

M. N. Dutt: Pierced with shafts endued with golden wings, those two (heroes), O monarch, looked as (beautiful) two lords of the forest covered with glow-worms during the rainy season.

M. N. Dutt: Their bodies looking resplendent with arrows (they were pierced with) those two great car-warriors appeared in that battle, like two furious elephants with their bodies covered all over with (blazing) meteors.

M. N. Dutt: Then, O great monarch, in that encounter, the mighty car-warrior Somadatta cut-off with cresent-shaped arrows the great bow of the descendant of Madhu.

M. N. Dutt: (He) then pierced him with twenty five darts and at that time when speed was (urgently) necessary, he again speedily pierced him with ten (more) arrows.

M. N. Dutt: Thereupon Satyaki, taking up a very strong bow, speedily pierced Somadatta with five arrows.

M. N. Dutt: Then again, Oking, Satyaki, as if with a smile in that battle, cut down with another broad-headed shafts the golden standard of the son of Balhika.

M. N. Dutt: Seeing his standard cut down Somadatta fearlessly pierced the grandson of Sini with twenty-five arrows.

M. N. Dutt: Filled with wrath, Satyaki also, in that engagement, cut-off with a keen and razorfaced shaft, the bow of the (great) bowman Somadatta.

M. N. Dutt: He then, O great king, pierced him (i.e. Somadatta), who then looked like a snake with its fangs broken, with one hundred straightcoursing arrows furnished with golden wings.

M. N. Dutt: Thereupon the greatly puissant Somadatta, the great car-warrior, taking up another bow, covered Satyaki with downpours of shafts.

M. N. Dutt: Satyaki also, getting greatly excited with wrath, pierced Somadatta in that battle. Somadatta, on his part, afflicted Satyaki with showers of arrows.

M. N. Dutt: Bhima also, for the sake of Sattvata, struck the son of Valhika with ten arrows. And the dauntless Somadatta also pierced Bhima with sharpened arrows.

M. N. Dutt: Thereupon Satyaki, excited with wrath, discharged at the chest of Somadaita. a new, strong and formidable Parigha furnished with a golden handle.

M. N. Dutt: (But the descendant of Kuru), as if with a smile, cut-off into two parts, in that engagement, that dreadful-looking Parigha so it was advancing against him.

M. N. Dutt: Thus severed into two parts, that great Parigha of iron, fell down (on the ground) like the great peak of a mountain riven by thunder.

M. N. Dutt: Then, in the engagement, o king, Satyaki cut-off the bow of Somadatta with one broadheaded arrows and with another five the leathern case that sheathed his fingers.

M. N. Dutt: Then with four darts he speedily sent before the lord of the departed spirit the four excellent horses (of Somadatta).

M. N. Dutt: And, O Bharata, that foremost of carwarriors, as if with a smile, cut-off, with a broad-headed and straight-coursing arrow, the head of his charioteer from the trunk.

M. N. Dutt: He then discharged (at Somadatta himself) a highly dreadful arrow, blazing like the fire, furnished with golden wings, bathed in oil and sharpened on stone.

M. N. Dutt: Shot with great force by the grandson of Sini that excellent and formidable shaft, darted like a falcon, at the chest of Somadatta.

M. N. Dutt: The great car-warrior Somadatta, deeply pierced by the puissant Satvata, fell down (from his car) and died, O great king.

M. N. Dutt: Seeing Somadatta slain there, your soldiers proceeded against Yuyudhana with a large number of cars. arrowS

M. N. Dutt: The Pandavas also, O mighty monarch, accompanied by all the Prabhadrakas and by a large army, made a rush upon Drona's division.

M. N. Dutt: Then, Yudhishthira, filled with rage, began to crush the troops of the son of Bharadvaja with in the the very presence of Bharadvaja's son.

M. N. Dutt: Seeing his troops troops put to rout by Yudhishthira, Drona, with eyes, blood-shot in wrath, furiously rushed against him.

M. N. Dutt: Then, (Drona) pierced the son of Pritha with seven sharpened darts. Yudhishthira also, inflamed with rage, pierced him in return with five (arrows).

M. N. Dutt: That mighty bowman, being (thus) deeply pierced, for a moment licked the corners of his mouth and (then) cut-off the standard and also the bow of Yudhishthira.

M. N. Dutt: Deprived of his bows, that excellent king took up another tough and strong bow, with great speed when speed was highly necessary.

M. N. Dutt: Then with a thousand shafts, the son of Pandu pierced Drona together with his horses, charioteer, standard and car and this (feat on the part of Yudhishthira) seemed marvellous.

M. N. Dutt: In consequence of the strokes of those darts, Drona, the foremost of the Brahmanas, being (greatly) pained, sank unconsciously for a moment on the terrace of his car.

M. N. Dutt: Then regaining his consciousness, heaving sighs like a snake and excited with a terrible wrath, he brought into existence the weapon presided over by Vayu.

M. N. Dutt: But the dauntless and puissant son of Pritha, in that fight taking up his bow, checked the career of that weapon with one of his own.

M. N. Dutt: And the son of Pandu also cut-off the large bow of that Brahamana. Drona, the grinder of the Kshatriyas then, having taken up another bow.

M. N. Dutt: The best of the Kurus cut-off that also with keen and broad-headed shaft, Then Vasudeva, addressed Yudhishthira, the son of

M. N. Dutt: "O mighty armed Yudhishthira, hear wihat I tell you. O foremost of the Bharatas, do not fight with Drona.
