Dutt: Vaishampayana said "After all the soldiers had been killed during the hour of sleep by those three carwarriors, king Yudhishthira sorrowfully said to Krishna:-'How, O Krishna, could my sons, all of whom were great car-warriors, be killed by the sinful and wretched Ashvatthaman who is not an expert in battle? |

M. N. Dutt: If Mahadeva is pleased he can grant even immortality! Girisha can give such courage as will succeed in checking Indra himself. |

M. N. Dutt: He, is the beginning, the middle, and the end of all creatures! This universe acts and moves through his power. |

MN DUTT: 06-178-009 एवं सिसृक्षुर्भूतानि ददर्श प्रथमं विभुः |
M. N. Dutt: The powerful Grandfather, desirous of creating living animals saw Rudra; and the Grandfather asked him, saying,-Create living creatures immediately.—Thus addressed the twany haired Rudra said,-So be it!-and plunged himself into the water and practised austerities for a long time, because he was sensible of the defects of living creatures. |

M. N. Dutt: Having waited for Rudra for a very long time, the Grandfather by his willpower called into being another living being for the purpose of propagating his species. |

MN DUTT: 06-178-011 सोऽब्रवीत् पितरं दृष्ट्वा गिरिशं सुप्तमम्भसि |
M. N. Dutt: Seeing Girisha plunged into the water, this (second) being, said to his father,-If there be no other being born before me, then I shall multiply my self. |

BORI CE: 10-017-014 तमब्रवीत्पिता नास्ति त्वदन्यः पुरुषोऽग्रजः |
MN DUTT: 06-178-012 तमब्रवीत् पिता नास्ति त्वदन्यः पुरुषोऽग्रजः |
M. N. Dutt: His father replied, saying,—There is no other born before you! Shiva has pledged himself into the water! Go and create living creatures, without any fear. |

MN DUTT: 06-178-013 भूतान्यन्वसृजत् सप्त दक्षादींस्तु प्रजापतीन् |
M. N. Dutt: He then created many living creatures, having Daksha for their first, who created all those four-fold creatures. |

MN DUTT: 06-178-014 ताः सृष्टमात्राः क्षुधिताः प्रजाः सर्वाः प्रजापतिम् |
M. N. Dutt: As soon, as they were born, they ran, O king, towards their father,. stricken with hunger and desirous of eating him up. |

M. N. Dutt: The second being whom Brahman had created, thereupon ran towards him, seeking protection from his own offspring. And he said to the Grandfather,-Oillustrious one, save me from these, and let these creatures have their food. |

MN DUTT: 06-178-016 ततस्ताभ्यो ददावन्नमोषधी: स्थावराणि च |
M. N. Dutt: Then the Grandfather gave herbs and plants and other vegetables as their food, and assigned for the strong the weaker creatures as their food. |

MN DUTT: 06-178-017 विहितान्नाः प्रजास्तास्तु जग्मुः सृष्टा यथागतम् |
M. N. Dutt: Their means of sustenance having been thus settled the newly created creatures all went away where they liked, and cheerfully multiplied their respective species. |

M. N. Dutt: After the creatures had multiplied and Brahma had become well gratified, the firstborn rose from water and saw the living creation. |

BORI CE: 10-017-021 बहुरूपाः प्रजा दृष्ट्वा विवृद्धाः स्वेन तेजसा BORI CE: 10-017-022 तत्प्रविद्धं तदा भूमौ तथैव प्रत्यतिष्ठत BORI CE: 10-017-023 किं कृतं सलिले शर्व चिरकालं स्थितेन ते |
MN DUTT: 06-178-019 बहुरूपाः प्रजाः सृष्टा विवृद्धाश्च स्वतेजसा |
M. N. Dutt: He saw that various kinds of creatures had been created and that they had multiplied themselves. Seeing it, Rudra became angry and made his generative organ disappear in the bowels of the Earth. Then soothing him by soft words, Brahman said to him-O Sarva, what were you doing so long within the water? Why have you made your generative organ disappear in the bowels of the Earth? |

MN DUTT: 06-178-020 सोऽब्रवीजाजसंरम्भस्तथा लोकगुरुर्गुरुम् |
M. N. Dutt: Thus accosted, that lord of the universe angrily answered the lord Brahman,Somebody else has created all these creatures. What purpose then would be fulfilled by this organ of mine. |

BORI CE: 10-017-025 तपसाधिगतं चान्नं प्रजार्थं मे पितामह |
MN DUTT: 06-178-021 तपसाधिगतं चान्नं प्रजार्थं मे पितामह |
M. N. Dutt: I have, by my active penances, O Grandfather, created all these creatures. These herbs and plants also will multiply like those that will live upon them. |

BORI CE: 10-017-026 एवमुक्त्वा तु संक्रुद्धो जगाम विमना भवः |
MN DUTT: 06-178-022 एवमुक्त्वा स सक्रोधो जगाम विमना भवः |
M. N. Dutt: Saying so, Bhava went away, dispirited and angry, to the foot of the Munjavat mountains for practising austere penances.” |
